The Shafeek Nader Trust for the Community Interest proposed that the rundown
playground be renovated and expanded. It offered a $20,000 challenge grant
to be matched by the community.
With the
help of the Community Lawyer, citizens organized, developed a proposal
and hired a group that helps citizens design and build their own playground.
Volunteers raised over $25,000, with the children collecting $5,000 in
pennies. The Community Lawyer obtained a state sales tax exemption for
the volunteer group to facilitate the tax free purchase of the materials.
In true "barn
raising" style, hundreds of residents volunteered their time, skills,
equipment and hard work to rebuild the 10,000 sq. ft. playground.
